Haircare Tips for Beach Holidays

My top tips for looking after your hair on a beach holiday or whilst travelling…

Looking good whilst travelling can be tricky. Whether you’re on the road long term, or just spending a week abroad, new climates and activities can wreak havoc on your natural beauty.

So, I plan to launch a mini series about hair care tips for travellers – starting with these tips for hair care on beach holidays.

If you love the beach life as much as me, you’ll know it can wreak havoc on your hair. Check out my tips below to see how to take care of your tresses on the road…

5 Hair Care Tips for Beach Holidays

1. Give Your Hair a Rest

Your hair is going to face a lot of changes whilst travelling. The climate, weather, humidity and even the water hardness will be different from back home, and that can mess up your hair. Don’t add to all that by following your normal styling routine. Give your hair a rest; leave the straighteners at home, let your hair dry naturally after a shower, and don’t over wash it.

2. Care for your hair at the Beach

Salt and chlorine can dry your hair out. After swimming, rinse your hair with fresh water, then blitz the ends with a leave-in conditioner. Another top tip is to slather your hair with oil – preferably a natural one like olive or coconut oil – before swimming in sea or pool water. This way, your hair will absorb the oil instead of the damaging salt or chlorine.

3. Protect Your Hair from the Sun

Don’t let your hair overheat or burn! Wear a hat or headscarf when you go out into the sun, and double up with a UV protection spray. I love Solar Sublime from Loreal.

4. Hair Care Whilst Travelling Long Term

If you’re away for a long period of time, you need to make sure you continue to get regular haircuts to get rid of any damaged ends and keep your hair healthy. You could also consider getting a new style, or even hair extensions, to liven things up.

5. Learn Some Beach Styles

Head to YouTube and learn a few simple hairstyles that work for your hair type and length. Braids and loose buns work great for the beach, and up-do’s are perfect for keeping your hair off your neck in hot climates.

But, don’t go longer than a few days without brushing your hair; tangled hair is more prone to breakage.
