My review of the Pebble luggage set from JOLLYING: hard-shell collapsible suitcases for the ultimate space-saving solution!

As a full-time travel blogger, I’m always on the move, taking dozens of trips every year! So, I like to think I’m something of an expert when it comes to packing, and I know the value of a decent set of luggage.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been road-testing the Pebble collection from JOLLYING – and I’m obsessed! These cases are so cleverly designed. There are some really clever touches (which I’ll cover in more detail below), but the main USP is that the Pebble cases are foldable, collapsing down to just 11cm wide for easy storage when you’re not using them. Genius!

JOLLYING Pebble Sizes Explained

As mentioned above, JOLLYING’s Pebble luggage comes in four sizes: carry-on (20″), plus 24″, 30″, and a 30″ trunk case. See below for the size and capacity details:

CARRY-ON 20″: 21.3x15x9.06″ – 35L capacity – 6.2lb (2.8kg) weight.

CHECKED 24″: 27×19.3×11″ – 86L capacity – 9.9lb (4.5kg) weight.

CHECKED 30″: 29.5×20.8×11.4″ – 106L Capacity – 13lb (5.9kg) weight.

TRUNK 30″: 29×15.3×16.9 – 120L capacity – 13.2lb (6kg) weight.

Sizes are in inches.

Carry-on: The 20″ Lite Carry On suitcase is a surprisingly roomy little number, ideal for packing light on short trips. At 21.3x15x9.06″ (54x38x23cm), it fits most airlines’ carry-on size restrictions, including EasyJet, British Airways, Aer Lingus, and Wizz Air. However, it’s slightly too big for Ryanair, as their paid-for cabin baggage allowance is 55x40x20cm.

Checked: JOLLYING’S checked baggage options are much larger. I’ve been testing the smallest option, the Pebble 24″, and it’s absolutely perfect for one person! If you’re a solo traveller like me, this is the size you need: that 86L capacity should be plenty for a trip of up to a week. The 30″ with 106L capacity would be better for longer trips, while the 120L Trunk size is big enough to pack for a whole family!

Top Tip: Be wary of over-filling that 120L trunk case, because it could easily take you over the hold baggage weight allowance.

JOLLYING Pebble Luggage Review: My Experiences

After testing out the JOLLYING Pebble luggage for a few weeks, I have to say, I’m very impressed.

First of all: I love the design! These cases come in a wide range of fun colours. I opted for the pink 24″ and blue 20″, both of which are very light pastel shades and look absolutely lovely. Don’t worry, there are more sedate black and grey options if you want to keep things classic! The cases are very sleek, with black trim and rounded corners, giving them a really minimalist, stylish look.

But how pretty they are isn’t quite as important as what the cases are actually like! There are several clever design features which set the JOLLYING Pebble suitcases apart from other cases I’ve tried. I’ll expand on those key features in more detail below…

Foldability (the biggest USP!)

This is the big USP of the Pebble suitcase range: they’re foldable/collapsible, a unique feature which won them an IF Design Award in 2022. When you’re not using them, the cases fold down to just 4.33” (11cm) wide, making them incredibly easy to store.

The middle section of the suitcases is made from a sturdy fabric (wear-resistant, scratch-resistant, and splash-proof Oxford cloth). It’s very easy to fold and unfold the case. Inside, there are four hard edges which you can fold up and clasp into place to support the fabric edge when you’re using the case:

Fold up the sides and clasp into place

This step is a little fiddly (I found it tricky to get the clasps in place), but it’s simple enough. The clasps feel very sturdy, and when I tried to push the edges down from outside the bag, they stayed upright, so I think it would survive a few knocks while in the hold. That said, I’d still recommend wrapping any breakables just in case!

To fold/collapse the Pebble suitcase for storage, you unclasp and collapse the four sides, push the fabric edges down, and zip the case closed. There’s a leather strap with a magnetic clasp on either side to hold it shut. (When the bag is extended, a magnet inside the fabric secures these straps, to stop them flapping about.)

This folding feature is genius! It’s such a simple, elegant solution to the problem of suitcases taking up far too much space when they’re not in use. These two cases fit neatly into the bottom of my wardrobe and hardly take up any space between them.

The folded cases take up so much less space!

Manoeuvrability

The suitcases all have an aluminium three-stage adjustable telescopic handle and four 360° spinner wheels, allowing for awesome manoeuvrability. I’ve tested both my cases out on a variety of surfaces. They glide well, turn easily, and are super easy to move around, even on trickier surfaces like a flagstone street and busy areas.

The wheels are fairly quiet. They’re completely silent on carpeted floors, but make a bit of noise on hard floors and paved surfaces. They are, however, about as quiet as I think suitcase wheels can be – I’ve never come across any that are totally silent.

Space and organisation

Most hard shell cases I’ve used before open out down the middle (book-style) into two sections, but the JOLLYING Pebble suitcases unzip around the top. This 1:9 opening design means you pack everything into one section of the case, which JOLLYING say gives them 20% more capacity than other cases.

It definitely feels like you have more space this way, as it’s just one large space in the suitcase to fill. And there’s no lifting a heavy, fully-packed half-a-suitcase when you want to open it; you simply unzip and lift up the front.

Both cases have a slim interior side pocket built into the front half (the 24″ case has a zipped pocket, the 20″ carry-on has a pocket with no zip). There’s not much else in the way of organisation, but that means you have a large, unrestricted interior space to play with.

Top Tip: I highly recommend using some packing cubes to help organise the space inside. Read my review of eBags packing cubes here.

Durability

I was a little worried that the fabric edge that makes these cases foldable might make them a little less durable than a classic hardshell suitcase. But the fabric is a wear and scratch-resistant cloth, designed for durability, and the fold-out interior edges add an extra layer of protection.

The rest of the case is made from impact-resistant polycarbonate, a material which is incredibly durable and hard to damage. The zip is very chunky and flows easily, with high-quality zipper pulls, so it feels like it would last very well. Oh, and the 360° spinner wheels come with a lifetime free repair warranty, which feels very reassuring! Overall, the cases feel good quality and built to last, with no real signs of wear after my testing process.

In case you skimmed through the above, here’s a quick list of what you need to know about the JOLLYING Pebble luggage range:

  • Collapsible down to just 4.33″ (11cm) for space-saving storage!
    • Folding the interior edges up can be fiddly, but it doesn’t take too long.
  • Minimal organisation, but maximum inside space.
  • The 1:9 opening design means there’s just one large interior space to fill, rather than two halves like many cases.
  • One slim inside pocket.
  • The four smooth 360° spinner wheels glide and twist really well with minimum effort.
    • And the wheels come with a lifetime warranty for free repairs!
  • The cases feel built to last and are made from durable materials: polycarbonate hard shell and wear-resistant Oxford cloth fabric for the collapsible sides.
  • These cases are fairly lightweight for hard-shell luggage.
    • Although the larger ones are over 5kg, which will eat into your luggage allowance!
  • Stylish, minimalist design with curved edges and a great range of fun colour options.

As mentioned in the review, pay close attention to the sizes when choosing your suitcase. The Carry On 20″ may be too large for some budget airlines’ cabin baggage allowance. When choosing a checked suitcase size, it’s easier to look at the capacity rather than the measurements: around 80-90L should be plenty for one person.

Overall, I really do think these are great suitcases! Folding down to half the width means they fit so easily in my wardrobe, so I’m always ready for the next adventure. The cases definitely seem built to last, too, so I’m looking forward to using them on even more travels in future.

How I Tested the Cases

As mentioned in the intro, I’ve travelled a lot over the years! I’ve tried and tested a lot of different suitcases, backpacks, and packing accessories in that time, so I really do know what to look for (and what red flags to look out for).

For this review, I put the cases through my usual testing. I filled them with about 10kg and pulled them around in a few different locations and on various surfaces, including pavement (sidewalk), a gravel path, inside a train station, and carpet. I walked both cases around the interior of my flat several times, navigating furniture (and my constant mess!). To see how easy it is to use the cases in normal travel situations, I also loaded the cases in and out of my car (both the car boot and the back seat), and rode one stop with them on a train. They were easy to manoeuvre and held up well under normal use.
